West Elk Wolverines pass first test as new valley-wide hockey program

Start league play with two wins

It was a momentous occasion. After years of existing as a contentious valley rivalry, the Gunnison Blades and Crested Butte Wolfpack midget (high school–age) hockey teams joined forces as the West Elk Wolverines in perpetuity.
They’ve been working hard the past several weeks under new head coach Joe Otsuka and last weekend was the new program’s first test as they opened league play on the Front Range with two games against Ranch Hockey Club.

Trade punches with San Juan mountain towns

The Crested Butte Titans boy’s basketball team will ride a fine line between greatness and mediocrity all season long. While the talent is either there already or soon to emerge, they must remain healthy and focused if they are going to make a statement in the Southern Peaks league this season.
“We can play ball but we have no room for error,” says coach Brandin Hamilton.

Focus continues on fundamentals

If you’re focused on final scores, wins, losses and other numerical ways to gauge talent, then it’s going to be a long season for the Crested Butte Lady Titans basketball team. Fact is, the team is young and inexperienced and, for one reason or another, sits in the middle of a number of 2A girls basketball powerhouse programs. Their league, the Southern Peaks, is often considered one of the top 2A leagues in the state, sending as many as three teams annually to the state tournament.

Fat bike race season rolls this Sunday

You’ve seen them around town, on the ski area and up and down most of the surrounding valleys. This Sunday, you can catch them in some serious medium-speed, low psi action as Fat Bikers kick of the 2014-2105 race season with the Magic Meadows Fat Bike Race on Sunday, December 21 at 2 p.m. on the Magic Meadows Nordic trail by Peanut Lake.
